Kershaw Street Revitalization Project

“There may have been a time when preservation was about saving an old building here or there, but those days are gone. Preservation is the business of saving communities and the value they embody”
Richard Moe, National Trust for Historic Preservation

"In recent years, too many of these homes and their histories have been lost to demolition, leaving in their wake vacant spaces in need of new “infill” homes. Other homes are in need of refurbishment. The goal of the Kershaw Street Revitalization Project is to end the era of demolitions and chart a new course toward rehabilitating existing homes and building modest, new homes in keeping with existing architecture. The hope of the Kershaw Street Revitalization Project is to inspire the spirit of support and dreams to expand the vision of the Kershaw Street Project throughout the Schofield neighborhood."
Beatrice McGhee, Member-Schofield Community Association

What is the Project?

The project is a collaborative, public-private effort to revitalize one side of a single Kershaw Street block. Existing homes will be refurbished, and new homes of modest price and in the architectural style of existing Schofield neighborhood homes will be built to infill the vacant lots.

How the Project Works?

A joint advisory board will be set up to ensure that each stage of the project is appropriate to the style and era of existing homes in the neighborhood.  Funds will be administered through the Preservation Foundation of Aiken. The City funds will act as a revolving fund to build and refurbish, sell and reinvest. Homes should be suitably priced for teachers, police officers, veterans, tradesmen, business owners, young couples, etc. Owners will agree to maintain and upkeep the units. Home ownership and community upkeep to be agreed-upon.
